Branch Out! How Trees Can Affect The Value Of A Home

Whether you’re thinking about settling in for a long haul or trying to sell your house – you must always make a decision that’ll benefit you.

For example, when I bought my house, my focus was solely on the area it was based upon. And, why was I looking for so much space?

Well, to breed my own garden, of course!

I mean, you already know how trees can be beneficial for our health and environment, right?

Now, add the point of “increased value of the property” to the list, and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Even a report on Research Gate suggests that if you invest only $1 in-home landscaping, you’ll get a 109% of return on it.

Sounds pretty awesome, right?

Why Does Having A Garden Increase Your Property Value?

Bluntly speaking, the visual aesthetic of a tree (especially the floral ones) is undeniable.

And…

If you can keep them in the right places, they can complement the beauty of your house as well. Also, trees can cool down the environment surrounding your home. This, in turn, might indirectly help in saving your energy cost and lower your bills too.

However, that’s more of a technical talk. For me, my garden feels like an escape from the never-ending feistiness of the outer world.

It’s almost like a private oasis where I find peace and comfort.

But, there’s a catch.

Not every type of tree can help you increase the value of your property. If you mistakenly plant something that isn’t going with your house’s design, it might hurt your long-term plans.

Hence, before you do anything, don’t forget to give call an arborist tree surgeon. They can create a plan for you and tell you about the best plants you can get for your house.

Or, you can refer to the next section of this article to gain more information.

Finding The RIGHT And Avoiding The WRONG

If I’m being honest, the best way to find the “right” plant for your house is to get an appraisal from an expert. But, if you’re here to get an idea or two, let me tell you about what I follow.

According to market research, any tree that’s large offers a lot of shade and grows quickly is the best for your house. An excellent example of such a plant is Red Maple. Aside from being huge, it can also improve the visual appeal of your house, thanks to the red leaves.

Nonetheless, if you’re looking for another option or two, you can choose between –

  • Northern Red Oak: A seemingly-timeless tree that develops pretty quickly on almost any kind of soil and wows the audience with a shining red colour during fall.
  • Sugar Maple: An American classic, Sugar Maple usually requires a lot of space to grow properly. But, when it does, it looks delightful due to the shade of the foliage.
  • Crape Myrtle: A beautiful plant bursting with fuchsia flowers, Crape Myrtle is ideal for the warm southern weather.
  • Bigleaf Magnolia: A rather small plant with humongous leaves and eye-catching white flowers, Bigleaf Magnolia can attract butterflies and pollinators frequently.
  • Concolor Fir: An elusive jade evergreen that creates citrus-scented needles and can get through almost any kind of weather perfectly.

However, any other tree with loads of messy leaves and large roots will be more of a hassle for your household. Here are a few examples of the same –

  • Weeping Willow,
  • Tree of Heaven,
  • Lombardy Poplar,
  • Bradford Pear, and
  • Leyland Cypress.

Here’s another tip.

Make sure that you’re placing the same type of trees in a line. It’ll make the whole formation look much better and more attractive than before.

Fruit Or Palm – What Should Be Your Choice?

I’ve seen many people wondering about whether it’s good to add a palm tree or a fruit plant to boost their property value.

However, truth be told, none of them can essentially help you out in this particular aspect. It’ll be more on what you want and how you want it.

For example, if someone loves mangoes, then having such a tree in your house could be a selling point for them. However, for the general mass, it’ll be nothing more than a plant that occupies a lot of space. So, make your decision carefully while you’re at it.

Should You Cut Down Your Trees, Though?

When it comes to improving the curb appeal of your house, you simply cannot afford to have a messy plant sitting in front. Hence, it’s always better to cut them once in a while. It, in turn, can improve their overall outlook and help with their growth as well.

And, if you’re seeing the following signs, don’t be afraid to cut down the plant entirely. It’ll surely do a world of good for you.

  • The treehouses are a massive infestation of decay-producing fungi, like mushrooms.
  • It has fine twigs without any living buds near the branches’ endings.
  • The availability of hanging or dead branches in the upper crown.
  • Peeling or chipped cracks and bark in the trunk.
  • Huge cavities inside of the trunk or huge scaffold branches.
  • The tree isn’t producing any new leaves at all.

Here’s something else you need to keep an eye on as well.

If a large tree is sitting within 15-feet or so of your house, it might be a liability in case of a tornado or something as such. It may also cause damage to your property. Thus, in that case, having it removed entirely would be the best course of action.

Branching Out For The Best!

Planting a tree or two in your house can definitely be stellar for your landscape. However, if you want to keep everything well-maintained, you must take care of the plants regularly. It, in turn, can improve your curb appeal, lower cooling costs, and much more.

Just make sure to plan out your landscaping effort as early as possible. Take the help of an arborist if you can. Otherwise, it might not pan out as you probably are expecting.
